From November 2011– March 2012, Aboriginal youth groups from across Southern Alberta invited Bridges Social Development to engage them in leadership development and capacity building by way of Bridges’ Unveiling Youth Potential (UYP) program. This training was rooted in the core components of Bridges’ programming: Wisdom Stories (who am I and what is my potential to inspire change?); Community Mapping (who/where are the communities that I care about?); Change Leadership (how can I inspire change?); and Social Entrepreneurship (what can I do to inspire change?).
Bridges staff and volunteers facilitated these training sessions, during which youth participants developed creative presentations as expressions of their own wisdom and potential. The presentations that emerged from the training were then celebrated at the first annual Aboriginal Youth Explosion event on March 18, 2012 at which more than two hundred youth, elders and community members gathered at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta. The Aboriginal Youth Explosion event was designed to provide space for Aboriginal youth to share their own personal wisdom with the broader Calgary community, and to celebrate the value of youth leadership and empowerment. Suncor Energy Inc. and La Vie Society partnered with Bridges to bring this celebration to fruition by providing support and sponsorship.
