The Toronto Star has rarely met an issue, problem or policy that it isn’t keen to re-frame as a war on women (or Blacks, or Muslims, or natives — but I’ll stick with women for now). Apparently, even fictional toy trains are fair game. Last week, the paper ran a piece called “Why Thomas is a really useless engine for girls.” In it, a Canadian professor explains her claim that the popular Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends television show contains a “conservative political ideology that punishes individual initiative, opposes critique and change and relegates females to supportive roles.”
Lock up your little girls, parents. Apparently, that friendly blue engine with a roundhouse full of pals is really a woman-hating oppressor who sidelines female mechanical devices and could destroy your daughters’ self esteem.
