Women’s Contribution

by JBogle

What do you see when you look at this picture?

Take note of your first impression.

Do you see empowered women?

Do you see a political connection?

Do you see oppression?

Is a young generation being liberated, with a more traditional generation watching from afar?

What stereotypes are brought into focus when you look at a picture without a context?

What would these women think if they were looking at a picture of you?

This photo simply frames a young girl about to participate in community work. It was taken to help illustrate the evolving role women play in the Jordanian culture.

When we speak to people, we need to be cognizant of the language they speak. Some connect with analogies, others with pictures, but if the message is strong then there is an appropriate medium that can be found.

In Jordan, a high school boy was asked if it was okay for a woman to participate in physical labor, specifically carrying rocks. His immediate response was, “No way!” The situation was then changed to ask if it was okay for a woman to participate in carrying rocks if she was helping her husband. After some consideration, he said that it would be okay. The moral of this story is that it’s natural for women to contribute to the building of their home, and that women, just like men, build their lives through their own personal efforts. The story was simple, but the lesson plays a role in shaping cultural norms and gender roles.

Now look at this picture.

What’s your last impression?
